I've spent my career at the intersection of business building and technology. I was one of the first US sales hires at Kahoot!, helping scale from a product people barely knew existed to thousands of schools and organizations across the country. Before that and since, I've launched brands from scratch, built e-commerce operations, run local service businesses, and worked inside startups where the gap between a great product and the people who need it comes down to one thing: how you present yourself online.
Along the way I noticed something. The businesses that grow fastest aren't always the best at what they do. They're the ones that look the part online, that show up in search, that display their reviews prominently, that have a site that makes a new customer think "these people are the real deal" before a single word is exchanged.
Meanwhile, the best businesses I've encountered are often invisible. The plumber who does immaculate work and has been in business for 20 years, running entirely on referrals, with a Facebook page from 2018 and no website. The landscaper every neighbor recommends, but whose name doesn't appear anywhere when someone new moves to the block and searches Google. The nail salon everyone raves about, losing walk-in customers to the mediocre competitor down the street who has a clean site and shows up first.
These business owners work harder than almost anyone I know. Early mornings, physical labor, customer service, managing employees, dealing with the hundred things that go wrong on any given day.
